Background

Users want clarity on where their PDFs and media files are stored. They're asking about:

  1. Storage Location: Where are PDFs/media files saved?
  2. Cloud Options: Should we use S3 or private cloud storage (Google Drive, etc.)?
  3. Admin vs User Data: Should S3 be for admins/foundation data only?

User Questions

Storage Provider Recommendations

  • S3: Good for admin/system data, but user data privacy concerns
  • Private Cloud (Google Drive): Better for user data privacy and ownership
  • Hybrid: Admin content on S3 + User personal files on user-chosen cloud

Current Storage

  • Tauri Desktop: ~/.atm/uploads/ (local filesystem)
  • Web Deployment: No server-side file storage yet (localStorage only for metadata)

Proposed Solution

Phase 1: Storage Selection & Display (Immediate)

Objective: Show users where their files are stored and let them choose provider

UI Components:

  1. Settings → Storage Configuration page

    • Display current storage location
    • Show usage statistics
    • Provider selection dropdown
  2. Upload Feedback

    • Show destination after upload
    • Display file size and location

Phase 2: Cloud Storage Integration (v0.3.0 - High Priority)

Google Drive Integration (Recommended First):

  • Most users have Google accounts
  • Generous free tier (15GB)
  • German privacy compliance (EU servers)
  • Well-documented API

Features:

  • Login with Google OAuth
  • Upload files to Google Drive
  • Sync with local storage
  • Choose folders for ATM content

Alternatives:

  • Dropbox Integration (for users without Google)
  • Local Storage Only (always available for privacy)

Phase 3: Admin Content on S3 (Advanced - v0.4.0 - Future)

Use Cases:

  • Pre-loaded Feldenkrais lessons
  • Training materials
  • System documentation
  • User guides

Implementation:

  • S3 bucket for system content
  • Read-only access for users
  • Admin-managed updates

Technical Considerations

Storage Adapter Pattern

interface StorageAdapter {
  upload(file: File): Promise<string>  // Returns file ID/URL
  download(id: string): Promise<Blob>
  delete(id: string): Promise<void>
  listFiles(folder?: string): Promise<FileInfo[]>
}

class LocalStorageAdapter implements StorageAdapter { ... }
class GoogleDriveAdapter implements StorageAdapter { ... }
class DropboxAdapter implements StorageAdapter { ... }

Database Schema Update

ALTER TABLE lessons ADD COLUMN storage_provider TEXT DEFAULT 'local';
ALTER TABLE lessons ADD COLUMN storage_file_id TEXT;
ALTER TABLE lessons ADD COLUMN local_file_path TEXT;
ALTER TABLE lessons ADD COLUMN storage_uri TEXT;

Privacy & GDPR Compliance

  • User controls their data
  • Option to export all data
  • Option to delete all data
  • Clear data processing policy
  • End-to-end encryption option

Acceptance Criteria

Phase 1 (Immediate)

  • Create storage settings page
  • Display current storage location
  • Show storage usage statistics
  • Add file metadata to uploads

Phase 2 (v0.3.0 - High Priority)

  • Google Drive API integration (OAuth)
  • File upload to Google Drive
  • File download from Google Drive
  • Storage provider selection in settings

Phase 3 (v0.4.0 - Future)

  • S3 integration for admin content
  • Pre-loaded lessons from S3
  • Admin content management interface

Questions for Product Decision

  1. Should we implement OAuth for cloud providers?
  2. Should users be able to use multiple cloud providers?
  3. Should files be synced automatically or on-demand?
  4. Should we track storage costs/quota usage?
  5. How to handle file versioning in cloud storage?
  6. What's our policy on data retention and deletion?
  • #18: TTS Customization (Phase 3)
  • #19: Lesson Detail View (Phase 3)
