Overview

Add basic Text-to-Speech (TTS) functionality to convert lesson text content into audio files for playback.

Context

Currently, lessons have extracted PDF text content but no audio files. Users need to be able to generate audio from lesson text for playback during Feldenkrais sessions.

Requirements

TTS Library Selection

Research and select a Rust TTS library:

  • Option A: (cross-platform bindings to TTS engines)
  • Option B: (eSpeak/TTS synthesizer, more complex but higher quality)
  • Option C: + external TTS (more flexible, requires external dependency)

Decision criteria: Cross-platform support, sound quality, ease of integration, licensing.

Backend Implementation

Add TTS generation functionality to Rust backend:

  1. Integrate selected TTS library in Cargo.toml
  2. Create generate_audio_from_text function:
    • Input: lesson_id (String), text (String)
    • Output: Result<String, String> (audio_file_path or error)
    • Generate audio file (MP3/WAV format)
    • Save with readable filename: audio/<lesson_id>-<timestamp>.mp3
  3. Add Tauri command generate_lesson_audio
  4. Update lessons table:
    • Set audio_path to generated file path
    • Validate file creation before updating database
  5. Error handling:
    • Validate text length (min: 100 chars, max: 100,000 chars)
    • Handle TTS engine errors gracefully
    • Return descriptive error messages

Frontend Integration

Add TTS generation to lesson workflow:

  1. Add trigger in Lesson details view:
    • Button: "Generate Audio"
    • Loading state: "Generating audio..."
    • Progress indication (if supported by library)
  2. Add DatabaseAPI method:
    • generateLessonAudio(lessonId: string): Promise<string>
  3. Update UI to show audio player when available:
    • Display audio controls when lesson.audio_path exists
    • Basic HTML5 audio player for playback
    • Show file size/duration
  4. Error handling:
    • User-friendly error messages
    • Retry mechanism
    • Validation feedback

Audio Storage

Implement organized file storage:

  1. Create audio directory in app data folder
  2. Filename format: <lesson_id>-<timestamp>.<ext>
  3. Support formats:
    • Primary: MP3 (compressed, good balance of quality/size)
    • Alternative: WAV (uncompressed, maximum compatibility)

Acceptance Criteria

  • TTS library integrated and tested on all platforms (Windows, macOS, Linux)
  • generate_lesson_audio Tauri command working correctly
  • Audio files generated successfully from lesson text
  • Audio files saved with readable, unique filenames
  • Database audio_path updated correctly
  • Frontend trigger added and functional
  • Basic audio player working with generated files
  • Error handling comprehensive and user-friendly
  • Documentation updated with TTS setup/usage

Technical Specifications

Performance Targets

  • Audio generation: < 10 seconds for 5-minute lesson
  • File size: < 50MB for 30-minute lesson (MP3 VBR)
  • Database update: < 100ms after file creation

Quality Targets

  • Minimum text length: 100 characters
  • Maximum text length: 100,000 characters (30 min ~10,000 words)
  • Audio format: MP3 (VBR, 128-192 kbps)
  • Sample rate: 44.1 kHz (CD quality)
  • Channels: Stereo or Mono (based on TTS engine)

File Organization

app_data/
├── atm.db
├── uploads/
│ └── <uploaded_pdfs>
└── audio/
    └── <lesson_id>-<timestamp>.mp3

Testing Checklist

  • Generate audio from short text (< 500 chars)
  • Generate audio from long text (~10,000 words)
  • File creation verified in correct location
  • Audio playback works in browser
  • Database audio_path correctly stored
  • Error handling tested (empty text, invalid lesson_id)
  • Cross-platform testing (if possible)
  • Memory leaks checked (long lesson generation)

Dependencies

Rust crates to add:

# Choose ONE based on research
tts = "0.25"  # OR
espeak-sys = "0.1" # OR
# rodio already in dependencies for potential use

Frontend dependencies:

  • None (use existing @tauri-apps/api)
  • May add audio player component library later

Notes

  • Start with basic voice (system default)
  • Voice customization (speed, pitch, voice selection) in Phase 2
  • Support for multiple languages (English, German) in Phase 3
  • Consider caching generated audio to regenerate only if text changes

Definition of Done

  1. Lesson text can be converted to audio
  2. Audio files are stored in organized manner
  3. Database correctly tracks audio paths
  4. Users can play generated audio in UI
  5. Error handling is comprehensive
  6. Build succeeds with no warnings
  7. Code follows project quality standards
  • #5: PDF Text Extraction (prerequisite)
  • #7: Audio Player with Controls (next step after basic TTS)
  • #8: Local Storage Complete (depends on audio storage implementation)

Priority: High (blocks Phase 1 completion)
Estimated Effort: 2-3 sessions
Phase: Phase 1 Foundation
Labels: phase-1, feature, backend, frontend

Audio Playback Implementation Complete

Successfully fixed the critical audio playback issue where generated audio files couldn't be played through the webview.

Problem

  • Initial implementation used file://${lesson.audio_path} URLs
  • Tauri webview blocks file:// protocol for security reasons
  • Direct file system access from frontend not permitted

Solution Implemented

Implemented base64 data URL approach:

Backend:

  • Added base64 = "0.21" dependency
  • Created read_audio_file() function to encode WAV files to base64
  • Added get_audio_data_url() Tauri command
  • Returns data URL format: data:audio/wav;base64,...

Frontend:

  • Added getAudioDataUrl() method to DatabaseAPI
  • Updated LessonCard and LessonListItem components
  • Implemented loadAudio() function with loading states
  • Audio player now uses data URL instead of file:// URL
  • Added error handling for failed audio loads

Technical Details

  • Base64 encoding bypasses Tauri file system restrictions
  • Loading states provide feedback during audio fetch
  • Error messages display when audio can't load
  • No more disruptive window.location.reload() after generation

Files Changed

  • src-tauri/Cargo.toml: Added base64 dependency
  • src-tauri/src/database.rs: Added read_audio_file function
  • src-tauri/src/main.rs: Added get_audio_data_url command
  • src/lib/database.ts: Added getAudioDataUrl method
  • src/app/library/page.tsx: Updated audio player implementation

Current Status

✅ Audio generation working
✅ Audio playback fixed (base64 data URL)
✅ Loading states and error handling complete
⏳ Testing pending (requires Tauri native environment)

Known Phase 1 Limitations

  • Base64 encoding increases file size by ~33%
  • No streaming support (entire file in memory)
  • System default voice only
  • No speed/pitch controls
  • WAV format only

These limitations are acceptable for Phase 1 and will be optimized in Phase 2.

Next Steps

For Testing:

  1. Setup Tauri development environment (Rust, Cargo, Tauri CLI)
  2. Run npm install && npm run tauri dev
  3. Execute comprehensive testing plan:
    • Generate audio from lesson text
    • Verify audio playback in browser
    • Test grid and list views
    • Test error handling scenarios
    • Measure performance metrics

If Testing Passes:

  • Close Issue #7 as complete
  • Continue to Issue #8 (Local Storage Complete)

  • Recovery checkpoint: .development/recovery/2026-03-28_audio_playback_fixed.md
